Renting a car in Phuket without overpaying

The checklist

• Deposit: how much, cash or card, and when exactly it is returned. Never your passport.
• Insurance: is it first class, and what is the excess — the most you pay if the car is damaged?
• What the insurance does not cover: tyres, glass, keys, interior, driving off-road, drivers not on the contract.
• Photos at pickup: every panel, the wheels, the fuel gauge and the odometer, with a timestamp, and a copy on your phone.
• Fuel policy: full to full is fair. “Return as received” with a quarter tank is hard to match and easy to charge for.
• Mileage: unlimited, or a daily limit with a charge per extra kilometre?
• Delivery and return fees: written down in advance, for both directions.
• Late return: how much grace time, and what happens if your flight is late.

Scratches: the most common dispute

Phuket cars live outdoors, park in tight sois and collect small marks. The only fair way to handle this is photos of every panel at pickup and again at return, taken together, with both sets on your phone. Marks that are in the pickup photos are not yours. If a company refuses to take photos with you, take them yourself before you drive off.

Very cheap prices

A price far below everyone else usually means something is missing: third-party insurance only, a high excess, a small deposit but a passport kept, or fees added at the end. Compare the total — rental, delivery, insurance and the excess — not the headline price per day.
